AI + Landscape Architecture: out of our hands?

Huge crowd (>150 people!) at the Ai and Landscape Architecture debate Pakhuis de Zwijger on June 1, 2023. See this LinkedIn post.

And these are my take-to-your-practice-lessons:

Rudi van Etteger “remain allert that your client will so much like the easy beauty of Ai generated images that you as a professional will have to upgrade and outsmart in this competition and ‘race well against the machine’”.

Paul de Kort “Ai has no hands and no body so it will always lack the subtlety and human quality in its visuals and interpretations. Spatial quality with all its sensory and embodiment will therefor remain the unique domain of expertise of spatial designers, so relax, don’t be scared of Ai. Just have fun with it”.

Dorottya Békési “Ai already is my critical friend and colleague that can challenge me and help me explore more options, inspiring combinations and fast brainstorm ideas. This makes working with a computer so much more challenging, engaging and rewarding!”.

Dick Scholtus “We have to quickly go beyond just fluffy-upping images and text with the help of Ai and move into really worthwhile data analysis and real life proof of sustainable design in all its complexity, so don’t lag behind and embrace this technology to grow the impact of landscape architecture!”.

Fedor Baart “I have already experienced that Ai can make some job positions obselete so brace yourself and really invest time, play and effort in exploring the huge potential of Ai in making digital twins, smart data analysis and grow your understanding of complex systems in – for instance – climate and watermanagement and design”.

Audience: “don’t forget legislation and privacy rules, public participation, source transparency, education”. “Please don’t assume that Ai will safe time and speed up all sorts of processes, because it is not speed that helps landscapes flourish, it is rather more time and slow investment”.

Thank you YOUNG NVTL Karlijn Kerstens Cor Simon Kitti Biró-Varga Karel van Dompseler Alison GaleaKarsten Blok For creating such a wonderfull evening, sharing amongst our community of practice in Landscape Architecture. More of this!
